Annabel Virella is an Intern at the Project 2049 Institute. She received a B.S.in Global Security & Intelligence Studies—Chinese Track from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, AZ. Annabel has studied abroad in Xiamen and Beijing, China through the Critical Language and Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship programs. She is currently a Master’s candidate at the George Washington University, pursuing an M.A. in Asian Studies with a concentration in Politics and Policy of East Asia. She is a current Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellow developing advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and beginning proficiency in Japanese. Her research interests include U.S.-China and Sino-Japanese relations, as well as political developments in Taiwan and the Korean peninsula. Annabel lived in Taiwan for a year, where she followed the election of President Tsai Ing-wen and taught English to Taiwanese youth.
