A Message from our Chairman: Congratulations to Ambassador Joseph Yun

By: Randall G. Schriver |

The Project 2049 Institute congratulates Ambassador Joseph Yun on his recent appointment as U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Compact Negotiations. We are pleased to endorse the Biden Administration’s efforts to prioritize the negotiations and signal the importance of the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau – known as the Freely Associated States (FAS) – to the United States and its allies in the Indo-Pacific.

Ambassador Yun, a former U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy and U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia, with more than 33 years of diplomatic experience, is an excellent choice to demonstrate to the Indo-Pacific that the United States is committed to the region’s stability, prosperity, and to strengthening the relationship between our four nations.

We have carefully followed the renewal of the Compact of Free Association talks begun during the Trump administration and have been concerned with the lack of substantive engagements since late 2020. This appointment is a positive step towards solidifying our multifaceted relationship.

We send Ambassador Yun and his team our wholehearted support to complete the negotiations with success, contributing to a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

The Honorable Randall G. Schriver

Chairman
